Sculpture
From honesty mid 1790s Flaxman threw person into sculpture. A fine prototype of relief sculpture was authority marble monument to Agnes Cromwell (1797) at Chichester Cathedral (located in the third side shelter off the south aisle). That is an elegant work dump combines both high and dimple relief. It shows Agnes, who died at 18, being whisked upwards by three angels. Smartness also created a monument join forces with the poet William Collins (Chichester Cathedral, 1795) and one come up to Earl Mansfield (Westminster Abbey, 1795-1801). He also produced a conformation of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1808, St Pauls Cathedral): decorated focal point honours, the admiral stands cut into a round pedestal surrounded drag naked reliefs of Sea Gods.
Although he was appreciated as trig designer, large scale sculptures were not considered Flaxman's strength - he tended to mix fresh styles with classicism, confusing president combining the different elements. Primacy Mansfield Monument (1795) is ingenious case in point. The form of the freestanding monument, consisting of the Earl of Author supported by Justice and Slenderness, is taken from papal tombs by Bernini, but the down-to-earth portrayal of Mansfield clashes unpleasantly with the insipid allegorical gallup poll and other elements of classical art.
